Shiksha

"Teaching is not a lost art, but regard for it is a lost tradition", my last post, just came across this thought and it just clicked immediately to me. I was left awestruck that how these minimal words had described my true feeling regarding "Teaching".

Gone are the days when they said, umm...rather, lemme say, felt, "Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu....". These words are just words now, may be said, but hardly felt. "Each profession has become a sort of business" is been talked about from long, but teaching is something different!

I hardly remember any of my friends having high regards for or getting highly inspired by any of the Teachers. Till school, it was still fine, but High school and College, Ununhhh....altogether different story!! The days in High school were meant to get to know the world outside, exploring the opposite sex, dates and mingles. For some dexters, it was the beginning for building the career base. Before even the start of first year of Junior college, class XII classes begun in coaching classes!! Yup, even before entering the college, the teachers there were rejected and the classes, a platform to experience a new, the most exciting and famous part of college life, "BUNKS"!! Colleges were more familiar with Bunks rather than attending classes, which were now referred to as lectures and Teachers now referred to as Miss' and Ma'ams, bechare Sirs, had no variety in that, called the same, whether it may be school, high school/ Jr college or College.

Hmm...so is this this attitude of students of not attending lectures makes the teachers less regarded or they themselves??!!

Ummm...Somehow, I feel both. Students lose regards for them, even before knowing them and they(i.e. teachers) lose regards for their own profession. For them, it's more of completing the lectures, than educating the children...oops...he he...better say, students!!;):)

Gone are the days when children aspired to be teachers and gone are the days when people chose their profession because they love doing that!! Profession these days is becoming more of a virtue, rather than choice, to be precise, a self created virtue, coz even if it is a choice, the eligibility criteria is mainly the salaries, rather than interests!! And the society has become such materialistic that I think the more progress Man is making, the more is Humanity suffering. Well, ahem, kahan se kahan pohonch gaya main!! Well may be this is an altogether different issue, close to my heart, closely related and hence may be strayed on to this!

Hmmm...so where were we??!! Yup, 'Teaching'. So, somewhat, the Teachers too are becoming so, like most of the other professions, by virtue and not by choice.I still remember, we used to think in college, that when they don't get anything else, they become teachers!! and That, was somewhat quite true, at least as far as engineering teachers are concerned!!And hence, students are not at all to blame here, coz most teachers we had in engineering, somehow, didn't deserve to be called "Teachers".They didnt have a penchant for teaching or educating students. They were there to conduct lectures, and make money. And with brand new staff and a Principal too with every changing year, what else can one expect from poor students but kosoing the entire system and teachers and college. Under such scenario, how can students have high regards for Teachers/ Teaching profession, and unless they have that, How are we gonna get good Teachers????

What could be the reason for all this?? the system, the low salaries, low regards, lack of other opportunities, lack of respect of our own interest or the lack of confidence to accept and go ahead with it??? What is it?? Whatever it is, but it has sort of become a vicious circle and there has to be a way out of it, if not, we have to create it!!
